The Sidney Hillman Prizes for Journalism and Public Service

The Sidney Hillman Prizes are annual monetary awards presented in memory of Sidney Hillman, founder and president of Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACG) — predecessor union to Unite Here and Workers United/SEIU. The Hillman Foundation honors journalists who shed light on pressing social issues–from finding lasting peace through to providing better housing, healthcare and employment; to upholding civil liberties and democracy while fighting discrimination of any sort.

Nazanin Boniadi, an Iranian-born actress and human rights activist, was honored with the 2024 Sydney Prize on Wednesday by being selected by a panel of judges from Sydney community and presented at an official ceremony held by Lord Mayor Clover Moore and NSW Attorney General Christian Porter at Sydney Town Hall.

Sid Wertimer, affectionately referred to by his students as “Sid,” graduated from Nichols School in Buffalo before attending Hamilton College to earn his BS. Sid worked there for 50 years – rising from student clerk to associate professor – as both an educator and valued member of the community. Sid served the college in numerous administrative capacities; these included associate dean from 1956-65 and provost 1975-80 before serving as College Marshall from 1980-91.

Sid was active in many organizations and charitable activities throughout his lifetime, including serving on the board of American Historical Association and as chair of New York Historical Society, serving on Hamilton College Foundation trustee board, receiving its Distinguished Alumni Award in 1990, founding Friends of Hamilton County Library as founding member and longtime member of New York Historical Society.

Overland magazine selects an outstanding short story each month from submissions made to the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize, generously sponsored by Malcolm Robertson Foundation. This prize includes $5000 cash and publication in Overland’s autumn issue. Shortlisted runners-up will also be published online; submissions from individuals worldwide are welcomed; for consideration for this award, entries must consist of fiction pieces of at least 3000 words that address travel themes broadly. Submissions must be received before midnight of the last day of every month in order to ensure an impartial judging process, blind entries must be made and judges will not know who has entered until they have chosen winners and runners-ups.
