Basic Blackjack Strategy
Blackjack is one of the most beloved casino table games and combines skill with chance. By developing basic strategy and understanding odds for winning hands, players can lower the house edge and increase their odds of success. Learning when to hit, stand, split double down or surrender depending on what card the dealer shows can significantly boost chances of success and reduce house edge.
At the start of a game of blackjack, a player places a bet using chips purchased from the dealer and buys at least two cards from her – one face-up and one face down – each player receives two cards from herself with either side facing up and face down, giving each a choice between asking for additional cards (hit) or remaining with their current hand (stand). If their total is 21 or better or greater than that of the dealer’s hand (which could happen), then they win; otherwise a 3:2 payout will apply.
Insurance: Insurance allows the player to wager against the dealer’s hole card and can make them double up their initial bet if the dealer holds an ace – up to half their original bet can be placed as an insurance bet and it pays 2:1 in case they hold blackjack!
Splitting: When dealing two matching cards such as eights or threes, splitting can be beneficial to your bankroll if the dealer holds weak cards like fours and sixes – otherwise only split aces and eights for optimal results.
Hitting: In general, hitting can be beneficial when your hand has an overall value of 11 or lower; busting at this stage is nearly impossible so there’s little risk in asking for another card. If however, your hand features threes or sevens it would usually be best to stand.
Standing: When you choose to “stand”, this indicates your satisfaction with the current hand and no longer want additional cards from the dealer. They will continue drawing cards until they have amassed 17 or higher and, should the dealer possess a blackjack, they will win automatically.
Surrender: Only available at specific blackjack tables, this option allows the player to save half of their original bet by early surrendering prior to dealer checking for a blackjack. Early surrender offers more value as it allows them to save half their bet prior to dealer checking for one.
Maintaining a positive mindset when playing blackjack is essential. While losing streaks may occur, keeping calm and confident will enable you to make sound decisions during each hand and avoid getting caught up in betting trends that could cost large sums quickly. Stick with your strategy whenever playing this card game!
