A Sidney Prize

A Sidney Prize is an award given by newspapers, magazines or other media outlets to articles or pieces of writing that demonstrate high levels of quality and integrity in their work. They may also go to journalists whose stories make an important impactful statement about politics or science. At our annual conference each year the National Association of Scholars also awards one such Sidney Award to an individual demonstrating outstanding contributions towards protecting academic freedom or protecting its integrity in academic life.

The Overland Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize was established in 2007 by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, with support from Laura Elvery, Paige Clark and Michael Winkler as judges. Michael Lewis provides an insightful essay illuminating those able to see reality clearly while most of humanity lives in delusion. As examples of such people he mentions Meredith Whitney and Steve Eisman – two financial analysts who understood that America had become an economic time bomb and warned about its dangers much before everyone else did.

This year’s Hillman Prize for Journalism will recognize a writer or journalist whose work seeks to advance social justice and public policy for the greater good. The foundation will consider all media forms, both traditional and emerging forms, with work that has the power to influence public opinion or effect change.

To be eligible, applicants must be current or former students at an accredited university and submit original papers written while in school relating to the competition theme, “What it Means to Be an American.” Submissions will be judged by scholars in relevant fields and two winning undergraduate papers along with one runner-up will be selected and published in Wittenberg East Asian Studies Journal; for more information and submission instructions visit our Hillman Prize Submission Portal – submission deadline is February 1, 2024!
