The Hong Kong Prize 2024

The Hong Kong Prize is an annual award presented to scientists who have made significant contributions in science and technology while exerting an impactful effect on research outcomes in Hong Kong. Sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, winners receive money, a certificate, and trophy. Competition open to scientists of any field including Life/Health; Physical Sciences/Engineering/New Materials/ Energy/ Advanced Manufacturing with each winner receiving a prize worth approximately HK$ 2 Million sponsored by BOCHK.

This year’s prize will take place from November 30 to December 2 and include forums, academic exchanges and youth engagement initiatives. It aims to highlight Hong Kong’s place as a global hub for science and technology under the “one country, two systems” principle while encouraging youth innovation drivers.

Last year’s prize ceremony took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre with notable guests like Liu Jiayi from the National Natural Science Foundation of China present to highlight Hong Kong as a world-leading scientific centre, while emphasizing young people as drivers of innovation. She noted how Hong Kong’s internationally recognized scholarship has strong national backing.

South China Morning Post reporters have won 12 awards at the 2024 Hong Kong News Awards, including best scoop. Editor-in-chief Tammy Tam praised their reporters as the pride of Hong Kong; senior reporter Sammy Heung won for her series on key movers and shakers in Hong Kong’s scientific field, while Harvey Kong and Xinmei Shen were named runner-up for Best Business News Writing category; also, The Paper won second place for unauthorised structures being added to luxury apartments.

As well as receiving cash prizes, prize-winning entries will also be displayed at a public exhibition. This showcase of winning submissions will provide a platform for discussion about Hong Kong’s future. Furthermore, it will raise awareness about their broader impact on society and economy.

The Prize is unique as the first award of its kind that recognizes projects that aim to have an effectful global and local economic impact. The goal is to foster entrepreneurialism, foster innovative ideas, and facilitate cooperation between sectors. Since its establishment in 2013, it has been awarded to numerous projects; most recently in June 2018. A ceremony for its presentation will take place in October 2020 with local and international experts serving on its judging panel; applications must be received before 30 August.
